Well done to all team members and keep up the great work as you prepare for the National Championship regatta in less than two weeks.

Yesterday the girls softball team traveled to St. Catharines to participate in the Zone 4 tournament.  The day started off against Thorold secondary school and our girls were up to the challenge winning 8 – 5 in a game that saw several girls reach base including, Alexis T., Madison M, London B and runs scored by Maddie N, Natalie A and Layla A, amongst others.  Hailey W. and Kaydence C. pitched a gem of a game.

The second game of the day saw us take on A.N. Myer and although the girls held them to 4 runs (a feat that was not achieved all day by any other team) they lost by two runs.

In the third and final round robin game, which the girls needed to win to advance to the playoff round, the bats went cold.  ☹ In the bottom of the last inning trailing by 4 runs we quickly got two outs.  All hope was almost lost until hits by Hailey W. and Alison H. put runners in scoring position for Jody V.  Jody went down 2 strikes and then swung at a low pitch and hit a “frozen rope” into centre field scoring both runs and landing her on 3rd base with a triple.  The girls were now down 2 runs and needed some more help.  Up to the plate stepped Braelyn W with her own bat and helmet (looking like she had done this before) and smashed a ball deep to left field.  Although her name was not Joe, and she may hit a bigger home run in her life, we appreciated that she “touched ‘em all” to tie up the game.  Maddie N., Layla A., and Natalie A. all reached base before Sasha T. cashed in the winning run.  This earned the girls a victory in “walk off” style.   Let me tell you, this game was amazing to be a part of.

The victory earned us a berth in the semi-finals against the defending champion SWC team.  The girls played their best game of the day but ended up on the wrong end of the scoresheet.  Our girls scored 5 runs in 4 innings, including 2 hits each for Camryn F and Allie P. and should be extremely proud of their efforts!

Mr. Belding and Mr. Smith would like to congratulate all the girls for their amazing efforts all day long.  You were a pleasure to coach and you represented Crossley well….Oh and by the way, they didn’t forget to smile!
