Days of Significance:
Holi-According to myth, a tyrannical king’s son, Pralad, refused to worship his father as God and was condemned to death by burning. However, the boy’s aunt, named Holika, transferred her own immunity from fire to Pralad, and burned to death in his place. This festival of colour celebrates Spring, where people play with liquid and powdered colours, light bonfires and blow horns to celebrate the destruction of Holika.(Hinduism)
Feast of Annunciation-A Christian celebration of the announcement by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus. (Christianity-Orthodox and Western)
International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery-This day offers the opportunity to honour and remember those who suffered and died at the hands of the brutal slavery system. It also aims to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice today.(United Nations)
Holla Mohalla-Mock battles are fought and martial arts are displayed in honour of Guru Gobind Singh, who took to armed struggle against tyranny. (Sikhism)
During much of the months of March and into April, many members of the Muslim community will be participating in fasting for Ramadan. If you are fasting and prefer to be in a space where there will be no eating, please join us in room 310 during the lunch break all during Ramadan. This will be a food free space open to anyone.
