DAYS OF SIGNIFICANCE
Eid Al-Fitr-This marks the end of the Ramadan fast and is celebrated for three days. Date of observance may vary according to sighting of the new moon. (Islam)
Chaitra Navratri (March 30-April 7)-Chaitra Navratri is a nine day festivity which starts on the first day of Hindu Luni-Solar calendar. This festival is dedicated to Mother Goddess Shakti and Goddess Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. Chanting of mantra, pujas, fasting and various rituals are part of the festivities. (Hinduism)
National Indigenous Languages Day-Approximately one in eight Indigenous people (237,420 people) reported they could speak one of 70 distinct Indigenous languages well enough to conduct a conversation in 2021, 10,750 fewer people compared with 2016, and the first decline since comparable data started being collected in 1991. The decline in Indigenous language speakers was driven by fewer people learning an Indigenous language in childhood and retaining it (also known as a mother tongue). In 2021, 184,170 Indigenous people reported an Indigenous mother tongue, 14,120 fewer people compared with 2016. Indigenous languages in Canada are considered at risk, with several classified as endangered. As documented by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, this risk is the result of intergenerational impacts of cultural genocide and discriminatory colonial policies, most notably residential schools. Today, however, there are some signs of language revitalization, with the share of Indigenous people who reported learning a Indigenous language as their second language rising from 24.8% in 2016 to 27.7% in 2021. Trans Day of Visibility-International Transgender Day of Visibility is an annual event occurring on March 31 dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide, as well as a celebration of their contributions to society.
