DAYS OF SIGNIFICANCE

Treaties Recognition Week-This week honours the importance of treaties and why they are relevant. E.L. Crossley sits on land settled during the “Between the Lakes Treaty of 1792”. Learning about this will support students in understanding treaty rights and relationships in their local community as well as across the province and country. (Ontario) Each day this week we will give out a fact about this treaty. Today’s Fact: The American Revolutionary War placed pressure on the British Crown to find lands on which to settle the newcomers. Among the Loyalists were approximately 2000 members of the Six Nations who had lost their homes fighting on behalf of the Crown and were relocated.

Holocaust Education Week-Learning about the Holocaust is critical in countering antisemitism and other forms of hate. Commemorating Holocaust Education Week enables us to: (1) understand key concepts including democracy, dictatorship, collaboration and genocide, (2) acknowledge the dire consequences of hatred and discrimination, (3) better equip ourselves to fight intolerance, prejudice and antisemitism today, and (4) recognize the survivors, heroes, and those who lost their lives.

Dia de los Muertos - Day of the Dead-This day is also known as the Day of the Dead, and is celebrated in parts of the United States and Central America. Families build altars in their homes surrounded with flowers, food and burning candles. (Mexico)
